Please read what the FCC opinion on net neutrality looked like in 2010 when I wrote this blog. Actress Justine Bateman, Justin Bateman’s sister inspired me to write this blog when I was acting CEO of the Women’s Alliance for Media in D.C. Justine has been a fierce advocate on keeping the Internet open for the masses. I feel very powerless right now in this discussion in 2017. If you have ideas on what the FCC should do, please make your voice heard. It does appear that the FCC may have a clue…when it comes to keeping the Internet open for the masses in the U.S. – It seems that the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), Hollywood, big Internet companies (Google, Verizon), the Wireless industry and public rights advocates are divided on how to preserve and, now upsell, the digital marketplace for consumers. A front page article in the New York Times, “Web Deal Near on Paying to Get Priority” (8/5/2010) cautions “Google and Verizon….are nearing an agreement that could allow Verizon to speed some online content to Internet uses more quickly if the content’s creators are willing to pay for the privilege..” However, recent postings on several blogs this week report that the FCC has opened up all closed door meetings with these companies. The snafu seems to be if the FCC actually has any power in this decision at all…. A federal appeals court decision in April involving Comcast and the FCC, restricted the FCC’s jurisdiction over broadband. Who is leading the discussion surrounding net neutrality so that the public understands this issue and how it affects us all? Active organizations are following these ongoing talks and speaking out…Go to savetheInternet.com and wikipedia and learn more about what net neutrality means. Remember….Justine Bateman ? On Family Ties? I was pleasantly surprised how knowledgeable and passionate she is about net neutrality. Ms. Bateman participated in a panel discussion during LATVFest. She’s very articulate and convincing about her views – to keep the Internet free for all….Anyway, she raised my awareness, so now that I have somewhat of a clue – I’m planning to stay posted….
