Leaders First. But It IS a big deal that they're Women Also

Now Announced, Drew Gilpin Faust is the new head of Harvard. Congratulations.

"I was the rebel who did not just march for civil rights and against the Vietnam War but who fought endlessly with my mother, refusing to accept her insistence that 'this is a man's world, sweetie, and the sooner you learn that, the better off you'll be,'" she writes. Harvard Considering Woman President

Drew Gilpin is being considered by Harvard University to replace current President Lawrence Summers. She's an expert on the Civil War and the American South....and she led the faculty gender task force at Harvard - created after the recent controversery about women's potential in the sciences - stirred up by Summers' comments at a faculty event. Click for a Yahoo story to read more.

This is a major leap for American society to have one of the top Ivy League schools to be considering a woman president. I also want to tip my hat to Associate Dean Lalia Rach at NYU's Tisch Hotel School who has held that post for about ten years. Women like Lalia in academia have proven women are more than capable and willing to lead universities. Read more about Lalia

Link to Peggy Orenstein's NYTimes Article

Read the NYTimes article "What's Wrong With Cinderella?" I googled the author of the article, Peggy Orenstein. I couldn't get the link through the New York Times website. This provactive article is quite good as it makes you think about Princess culture and I'm sure Daffy Duck at Disney and all the other characters are taking notice...and probably loving the publicity whether bad or good. (The article cost $4.95 to download). - it was a great read and she is a fascinating writer to follow further especially in her writings about women whether you agree with her or not.....Many thanks to my friend Percy for bringing it to my attention....

Percolating Princesses

I have received several emails from mothers worried about their daughters' fascination with princess culture . (see comment below). Let me know what you think about your daughters, sons and society's overall fascination with materialism and what "success" looks like to them. Anyone care to comment about the fairy tale character Ariel? - Cary Broussard

....Many of my friends including me are doctors and engineers. We were very worried how "into" princesses our 2,3,4 year old daughters are and were worried about the messages they were getting. Your analogies are wonderful and make us feel a lot better about the whole princess thing. By the way, Ariel is now one my daughter's favorite - do you have a lesson from Ariel? I never would have thought of most of the analogies you drew, and I learned so much. Thanks again for a great book and congratulations on a stellar career. I feel proud of you, even though I don't know you personally.

....Yes, my parents drilled into both my sister's and my head from a young age never to rely on a guy for money, so I hope to pass that message on to my daughter. Yet my friends and I felt overwhelmed competing with the massive marketing machine for the Disney princesses and I feel your book helped us compete on a more even playing field. (By the way, did you see the recent - around December, 2006-New York Times article along similar lines.)
